Online Qigong Class

Richard J Stantiford

Qi’ or ‘Chi’ means energy or invisible lifeforce. ‘Gong’ or ‘Kung’ means work. Therefore, the word Qigong (also spelled Chi Kung or Qi Gong) means the exercise of your internal energy.

It is a 5,000-year-old Chinese healthcare modality that has endured the test of time and is making a tremendous resurgence at the threshold of the 21st Century.

Qigong exercises integrate body postures, movement, breathing and meditation for a healthy life, spiritual advancement and/or martial arts training. Qigong outdoors recently appeared on BBC 1 Countryfile (November 2020).

What are the benefits?

Qigong is highly effective for improving health and vitality when practised regularly. Benefits of Qigong are increasingly recognized worldwide and within the scientific community. Qigong benefits range from mind relaxation and stress reduction to increased energy, vitality and helping to heal degenerative and chronic diseases.

Literally millions practice Qigong exercises in China and around the world each day to successfully treat diseases ranging from coronary heart disease, hypertension to cancer.

What does the class involve?

Our Taiji Qigong course focuses on the 18 movements known as “Shibashi” which was created by Professor Lin Housheng who is an internationally recognized qigong master.

Although I didn’t learn directly from Prof Lin, my teacher – Mark Peters was Prof Lin’s closed student, and therefore I have benefited from learning this practice from a highly skilled and authentic teacher. When practised regularly, one quickly becomes aware of the amazing benefits both to mind and body.

This truly is a welcome alternative to the traditional western aerobic exercise approach, which focuses primarily on increasing the heart and respiration rate with much faster and more stressful movements. Learning to feel and cultivate one’s internal energy force or Chi is a truly wonderful and healing experience.

Our next exciting course is something a little different and not as widely known or practiced, although it offers all of the benefits of Qi-Gong plus the additional benefits of resistance training.

I am planning to launch this new 8 week course on Friday 3rd September. The cost will be £79 (Plus ball £9) and places will be limited so please book asap to secure your place. I will be supplying a soft Weighted 1 KG Ball for all you that live locally (Sussex) at £9 each. For those of you that don’t live in Sussex it will probably be cheaper to purchase a ball from Amazon as postage will be expensive.

Online Cardiac Circuits

Cardiac Circuits zoom classes are available to all paying members and run from Monday to Thursday at 09:30 am each week.

The major benefit of these classes is that they enable “Clinically Vulnerable” patients to exercise together within an interactive group in a COVID SAFE ENVIRONMENT.

The beauty of these classes is they are fully interactive with the instructor (Richard Stantiford) who is highly specialised in working with clinically vulnerable clients with chronic disease such as coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, etc. You have an opportunity to ask Richard a question at the beginning and end of each session if you have any health concerns or injuries.

What does the class involve?

The class lasts about 50 minutes long and consists of a 10-15 minute progressive warm-up, followed by 10-15 bodyweight exercises performed as part of a cardiovascular circuit that is designed to increase heart rate and breathing to moderate intensity.

These exercises are repeated up to 3 times. The circuit is then followed by a relaxing cool-down that consists of slow graceful movements that are adapted from “Tai Chi Qigong” which combines deeper, slower breathing with a sequence of movements.

Heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration are all lowered as a result of these exercises. The class ends with stretches for all of the major muscle groups to help maintain flexibility and mobility.

How much does it cost?

Once you become a member you can access up to 16 sessions each month. The cost is only £45 per month unlimited which means each session can cost as little as £2.40!

Regular participation in these classes may result in
the following physiological adaptations:

  • reduction in blood pressure
  • improved blood glucose control
  • reduction in abdominal fat
  • better cholesterol profile
  • improved cardiac function and circulation
  • enhanced feelings of wellbeing
  • improved cognitive function

How do I sign-up?

Classes are £45 per month and all payments are taken by monthly direct debit. Click the sign-up button to set up your direct debit details. As soon as we have received your information we will contact you to explain how to join the first session and answer any questions you may have.
